The
Rover (2014) – D. Michod
Clearly, there are parts of Australia
that are just perfect for filming post-apocalyptic films. David Michod, director of the well-received
Animal Kingdom (2010) which earned an Oscar for Jacki Weaver, returns with this
dystopian look at our “post-collapse” future.
And truly it is a minimalist affair:
Guy Pearce doesn’t talk much but he wants his car back after a trio of
presumably bad guys steal it and head off.
He doesn’t hold back with his gun though. After capturing Robert Pattinson (playing a
not-quite-right bro of a bad guy), they set off in pursuit. Some of the journey is hypnotic, thanks to
the vistas and the music. This reminded
me a bit of some of Gus Van Sant’s latter day films. But too much violence and too much scowling
mar things, even if it isn’t too hard to imagine a future this bleak.
